Denton & Dallas , Texas
Denton, TX
Denton Texas is home to 2 universities: The University of North Texas [UNT] and Texas Womans University [TWU]. UNT is known for its Jazz and other music programs - Norah Jones went to UNT.
Welcome to Texas - where women have big hair and men have their 'dress jeans' - ironed of course. I can't make too many Texas joke...well I could, but my parents are from Texas
When people think of Texas they think of Cowboys, The Dallas Cowboys, and steak. Actually there is a large German influence in central Texas composing the German Belt - so the Texas microbrews have quite a German tradition.

Being a college town, there is an altar
to the Texas student lifestyle. You can drive through and pick up some
beer [the American way, not even getting out of your car]...or you can
stop and get a tattoo.
You can also drive through and just get a soda, just for the experience. |

This is Tex-Mex country, so there are
place like The Texican for a good lunch. Of course, places like this where
you need to use your college Spanish to order are great. It is so rare to
find 'tongue' or tripe on a menu these days, don't you agree.
For authentic Tex-Mex a pick up in the parking lot is quite reassuring. |

While in grad school we kept meaning to
get some BBQ from Steve's. It just looks like such a tiny place, that the
food would have to be good to stay in business.
I've also found out where those 'in the know' get their tamales in Denton....just down the road from Steve's BBQ. |

Yes, sometimes the police do drive like in the Hollywood movies. |
Dallas, Texas
People only seem to think of the tv show when they think of Dallas. It actually gets cold in the winter [ice storms being more common than lots of snow]. It is just South of Tornado Alley and there are some great storms that come across the flat landscape.
The culture in the area is more than eating and shopping, yes it is true.

Theatre
in Dallas - We saw the production of I" Love You, You're
Perfect, Now Change! " in November 2002 (The day I accidentally
lost Paul's brother]. We were chatting among ourselves when the cast came out. I
couldn't help but comment that, having seen so much theatre while living in
London my first thought when the show began was "Their American accents are
very good".
